Ideas For Consideration Of Rudimentary Tactics Of Solar Power Generator Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste Marie

Marie community members gathered in the Sault Area High School cafeteria Thursday evening to learn more about — and comment on — a proposal to reconfigure several buildings within the Sault Area Public Schools district. Superintendent Tim Hall outlined a plan which would place grades 8-12 in SAHS, grades 5-7 at Sault Area Middle School, grades 2-4 in Lincoln Elementary, and kindergarten plus first grade at Soo Township Elementary beginning next fall. Additionally, the Malcolm High School building would close, with those students relocated to half of the Washington Elementary facility. Hall stressed that the proposal is only a draft and no final decisions have been made. But he and Student Achievement Director Amy Scott-Kronemeyer said although reconfiguration has been discussed for some time, declining enrollment and changes to rules regarding the use of crucial state and federal funds have pushed administrators to act soon. “If we make a mistake we either get sanctions on how we can spend that money or we lose that money,” Hall said. He also listed the balancing of class sizes, improved teacher collaboration, and grade level consolidation as potential upsides of such a plan. However several speakers said they were concerned about issues like student safety, especially with eighth graders attending the high school. Hall noted the eighth graders would likely be housed in a dedicated area in the far corner of SAHS’s lower level, minimizing their interaction with older students. Some parents questioned the disruption of their children’s routines and the possibility of moving them away from teachers or staff members whom they have come to trust. “I just don’t want to rush our kids and I think that’s what we’re doing here,” said parent Tony Haller. Others stated they were worried about the impact reconfiguration could have on busing. Amber Ward said her son, a kindergartener, already spends 45 minutes per day on the bus and she would need to see a transportation plan before she gets on board. “That’s my make-it-or-break-it thing,” Ward said. Hall insisted that although logistics like busing have not yet been worked out, they will be given careful consideration if the district moves forward with any reconfiguration plan. He also said such a move should not result in any staff layoffs.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has initiated a study to convert its downtown one-way streets to two-way streets, namely Bay, Queen, Albert and Wellington Streets. A public information session is scheduled for December 6 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Russ Ramsay Board Room at the Civic Centre to hear comments and suggestions. All are welcome to attend this session as City staff and Consultants will be available to discuss the project. "The City's new Transportation Master Plan recommends considering this conversion to benefit downtown business and livability; introduce new pedestrian, cycling and driver safety features; and improve overall accessibility through the downtown and the waterfront," says Carl Rumiel, Design and Construction Engineer with the City of Sault Ste. Marie. "The main conversion disadvantage is the cost, for example of new curb work and traffic signals, utility relocations and property acquisitions which is why it's essential for us to present potential solutions and offer an opportunity for the public to provide input and suggestions." Downtown street operations have changed dramatically since one-way streets were first installed 60 years ago. Alternative ways of converting the one-way streets will be presented to the public. The Study is being conducted as a Schedule B project in accordance with the province's Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process. All members of the public are welcome to attend, and City staff and the consultant will be available to discuss the study. The City's study web site can be found at . If you would like to be included on the project mailing list, have any questions or wish to obtain more information on the project please contact Carl Rumiel at 705-759-5379 or email .
